A satellite phone keeps you in touch from virtually any place on Earth. Whether you are high in the mountains, deep in the desert, or out on the ocean, this device allows you to stay connected beyond cell phone range. And while there are other safety & communication technologies available for use on a vessel, like VHF radios, EPIRBs & PLBs, and GPS trackers, nothing beats a satellite phone when it comes to keeping you reachable. It relies directly on the satellite network of its communications service provider (e.g. Iridium, GlobalStar, Inmarsat) and allows you to text and make/receive calls; modern models give you access to the Internet for basic functions with an optional data kit, and some satphones have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS capabilities and an SOS button.
While a satellite phone allows you to communicate from just about anywhere, keep in mind that things like buildings, deep valleys, mountain ranges, and densely planted trees may obstruct the signal. The geographical coverage of the provider is of huge importance. Iridium and Inmarsat have global networks, with Iridium also being the only provider to cover the North and South Poles. While GlobalStar offers less coverage, it is recognized for its exceptional voice quality and more affordable calls. Whatever preferences you have, here you’ll find the right marine satellite phone with a set of features you need.
