Boat Antifouling Paints

A boat left on the water for a while attracts a variety of marine organisms that stick onto the hull. Over time, the buildup of marine growth slows down your boat considerably, reduces its maneuverability, and negatively affects fuel efficiency. Antifouling paints, or bottom paints, are formulated to keep those pesky mussels, algae, and other small creatures away from your hull. Most coatings contain biocides that are toxic to invasive species. However, some are biocide-free and prevent biofouling by creating a slippery surface not suitable for organisms to attach to.

Antifouling paints are not created equal; be sure to pick the one which is compatible with your hull material and will work in your sailing location. Most contain copper- or cuprous oxide-derived formulations that should never be used on aluminum vessels as they cause galvanic corrosion. For these materials, special zinc- or cuprous thiocyanate-based compounds are used. Some bottom paints are developed for use in saltwater, others are meant for freshwater, and there are formulations that are suitable for both.
