A boat may have several drainage systems that fulfill different functions. If a boat is stored ashore from time to time, it makes sense to install a garboard drain plug. Typically positioned in the lowest part of the transom, the hole for this plug is left open when the vessel is on the hard, which prevents rainwater from getting into the bilge or flooding the cabin. Besides, it helps prevent the freezing of water in the winter, which could otherwise result in expensive damage. Normally, the hole has a special flange for the plug to be screwed in, and both of them are usually made of stainless steel, bronze, or brass to resist corrosion.
