A propeller hub is a crucial component that connects a prop to its driveshaft and transfers the torque created by the engine. Besides, the hub is designed to work as a shock absorber when the propeller hits something underwater, which helps to avoid serious damage to the powertrain. In the 1940s, the shear-pin hub system was spread, with a breakable pin acting as a sacrificial component when the prop gets blocked. Throughout the decades of evolution, however, the construction of hub assembly was drastically improved to withstand higher torque.
More modern designs use a rubber or plastic inner sleeve, or more complex cushioning construction reinforced with high-tech polymers, and many solutions applied there are aimed at greater reliability, simplified installation, and longer lifespan. Some models even allow you to use the same hub system after replacing a damaged propeller!
