When you are on the water at night or during reduced visibility conditions caused by rain or fog, having your boat navigation lights operating properly can make a difference. They will make your craft better visible to other boaters and show what size it is and in which direction you are heading. Therefore, they prevent potential collisions. They come in a number of types which differ in color, range of visibility, arc of illumination, and location. Specifications and requirements are mandated for every description of watercraft by the law. To wit, powerboats along with sailboats when under power are required to have a masthead light combined with a stern one and side lights. Stern lights are white and located at the rear of a boat.
They should be visible across 135 degrees. The required visibility range varies depending on the length of a boat. As an example, for vessels that are over 39.4 feet but less than 65.7 feet, a stern light should be visible for 2 nautical miles. It is worth mentioning that boats which are less than 39.4 feet are also allowed to be equipped with an all-round light instead of a set of a masthead and stern lights.
